Game Recap: Baseball |

Toros Scratched by No. 11 Wildcats with Twinbill Loss

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team tried to keep up with Chico in a CCAA series-opening doubleheader Saturday, but the 11th-best team in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Top 25 proved to be too much as the Wildcats claimed both contests 17-4 and 7-2, respectively.

Game 1 – CSUC 17, CSUDH 4
After Joe Bresson got through the top of the inning, the Toros top of lineup quickly went to work on starting pitcher Hunter Haworth. Brandon Polizzi, Adrian Guzman and Esteban Ortega started off hitting singles to load the bases, Parker Hokuf drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly and Nick Morelli took a pitch to left field to bring in Guzman for the second run.

The second inning turned out to be a rough one for the Toros defensively. Three straight hit batsmen loaded the bases would set up a three-run inning and the Wildcats never looked back.

Bresson would reach four innings on the mound, allowing five earned runs. Jacob Musial threw 3.1 of relief, striking out three.

Polizzi would record two of the Toros 12 hits.

Haworth would reach six innings on the mound before turning it over to the bullpen. He finished with four strikeouts.

Game 2 – CSUC 7, CSUDH 2
Nick Suniga had perhaps the best outing in his CSUDH career, despite having to allow three runs on two homers and a RBI triple. The right-hander reached 7.2 innings allowing five hits and a walk while striking out two on 95 pitches.

The Toros did bring the deficit down to one by scoring twice in the eighth. With two down, Shawn Sweeney drew a walk and advanced to third on Brandon Evans' double. Polizzi, who already had two hits, hit into a fielding error that allowed the two runs to score.

Chico State did return the favor in the ninth when a poor throw in attempt to end the inning goes wide to allow three unearned runs across. The inning continued with a RBI single to right center to give the Wildcats a 6-2 lead.

Chico State starting pitcher Casey Costello, like Suniga, was brilliant in his 7.2 innings of work, limiting the Toros to five hits and a walk.

The series will conclude Sunday at noon.
