Softball Completes Comeback in Game One; Splits Doubleheader with Pioneers

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team put together a big rally in the sixth inning that enabled the Toros to beat Cal State East Bay 6-5. The Toros did pursue a second rally attempt in the evening cap but the Pioneers halted it in the seventh to take game two 13-10.

Game 1 – CSUDH 6, CSUEB 5
The Toros captured its first home victory with a collective gritty performance against Pioneer starting pitcher Abby Greer.

Leading the way offensively for CSUDH was shortstop Kendelle Messersmith who was 2-for-2 at the plate with a double, driving in two runs. Second baseman Jasmin Guzman joined the fun with two hits and a run scored.

Down 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, CSUDH took the lead with a four-run inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Messersmith drilled a double over the left fielder's head scoring Jade Loe and Lyzette Reveles, cutting the East Bay lead to one, 5-4.

After tying the game at five on a groundout by Jessica Lane, CSUDH capitalized on a throwing error by catcher Ali Cerminara that scored Messersmith from third to give the Toros the lead, 6-5.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Valinches had five walks in three innings of work, pitching in and out of trouble while holding East Bay to three runs on seven hits.

The Pioneers out hit the Toros 11-6, leaving 13 runners on base failing to take advantage of three bases loaded opportunities.

Loe made her way to the pitching circle and settled things down for CSUDH. She pitched four effective innings, holding the Pioneers to two runs on four hit the rest of the game.

Offensively East Bay was led by left fielder Courtney Leyba, who collected four hits and scored two runs.

Game 2 – CSUEB 13, CSUDH 10
Although a two-run home run by Sarah Fukushima put the Pioneers ahead in the first, the Toros put six on the board with both their bats and eyes. Guzman led off with a walk and scored on Murphy's double to right. Damari Simon followed by hitting a RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.

The Pioneers surrendered the go-ahead run when Bailey Glover walked Analisa Nicholson and Reveles to load the bases. Following a pitching change in which Olivia McWhorter came in relief, she walked Loe to force in the go-ahead run and Kayla Lock hit a base hit up the middle to drive in two and give CSUDH a 6-2 lead.

The lead was short lived as the Pioneers responded with an eight-run second inning, highlighted by another home run by Fukushima.

After the Pioneers added three more runs to take a 13-8 lead in the fourth, the Toros got an unearned run back. Lock was hit by the pitch, stole second and scored on Messersmith's reaching on an error.

The ninth inning saw Guzman leading off with a base hit followed by a two-run shot by Madison Murphy.

Sharie Albert and Valinches combined for two innings while Kiara Mendoza pitched five innings of relief.

The Toros and Pioneers meet again Sunday at 11 a.m.
