Baseball's Ninth-Inning Rally Comes Up Short at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team made one last effort to rally in the ninth inning but Point Loma Nazarene held on to edge the Toros 2-1 to take the third game of what is now a scheduled four-game seasons series Wednesday.

The comeback attempt began with back-to-back one-out singles by John Soteropulos and Esteban Ortega and Miguel Castaneda followed with a double to bring home pinch-runner Viktor Arreola. With the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Eric Pierce stranded those runners by striking out the next two batters for the save.

Other than Castaneda's double, the rest of the seven hits were limited to singles.

Left-hander Cy Scott got the starting nod for the first time in a Toro uniform. He went as far as four innings allowing the two runs in the third and fourth. Joe Mercado fanned two in three shutout innings of relief and Rigo Fernandez pitched a shutout eighth.

Kellen Sheppard, who got the game one win over the Toros in Carson last month, limited the Cardinal and Gold to four hits and striking out eight in seven innings.

The two ballclubs will meet one more time in April to make up for a rainout but in the meantime the Toros will now head to the Central Valley to play a three-game series with Stanislaus State. The series begins Saturday at 1 p.m.
