McKINLEYVILLE – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team put up a tough fight all series but No. 1 Humboldt State took two more away to complete the sweep with 7-2 and 11-1 (5 innings) wins Saturday afternoon.
Game 1 – CSUDH 2, HSU 7
The Cardinal and Gold continued to attack the Jacks pitching staff as Damari Simon and Analisa Nicholson and back-to-back singles in the top of the first inning but the Toros (1-20, 0-16 CCAA) were unable to get any runs on the board.
HSU (18-1, 13-1 CCAA) put up three runs in the first and two runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 7-0 lead.
The Toros spoiled the shut-out in the top of the seventh inning. Jazmin Guzman led off with an infield single and moved into scoring position when a walk was issued to Simon. Nicholson drove in Guzman with a single through the right side. Lyzette Reveles picked up the final RBI for the Toros bringing in Simon with a hit through the left side.
Guzman, Nicholson and Reveles each had two hits for CSUDH while Madison Murphy, Simon and Kayla Lock added one hit apiece.
Jade Loe pitched 2.1 innings and allowed five runs on five hits while issuing one walk and striking out one. Kiara Mendoza finished the game as she tossed 3.2 innings, allowed two runs on four hits, issued two walks and struck out two.
Game 2 – CSUDH 1, HSU 11 (5 Innings)
Dominguez Hills jumped on the scoreboard first after Nicholson led off the second inning with a single to left field, advanced to third on Kendelle Messersmith's double and crossed home plate on Lock's double to center field.
Humboldt immediately answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run homer by Winona Vigil to take the lead 2-1.
The Lumberjacks used seven hits to add eight more runs in the fourth inning to put the run-rule into effect.
Nicholson, Messersmith, Lock and Loe each had one hit for the Toros.
Sharie Albert threw 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on seven hits while striking out two and walking two.
CSUDH will play host to a rare double series with Sonoma State Tuesday and Wednesday to make up for a rainout last month. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on both days. The scheduled weekend slate will feature Cal State East Bay visiting Toro Diamond. First pitch on Saturday is 1 p.m.
