Toros Sweep Doubleheader with Coyotes at Home to Claim CCAA Series

CARSON -- It was an all-around performance that had led the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team to a pair of wins over Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. The Toros played cat-and-mouse but won game one 3-2 and two-run fifth inning enabled the Cardinal and Gold to take the afternoon cap 5-3 and earn the first CCAA series win of the season.

Parker Hokuf had four hits including a pair of doubles. Esteban Ortega also had a pair of doubles in the second game. John Soteropulos tallied three RBI on the day.

Game 1 – CSUDH 3, CSUSB 2
It was the Coyotes who struck first right away with a leadoff single, and a poor throw allowed the runner to reach third to setup a sacrifice fly for the first run.

The Toros would answer back in the second inning. Nick Morelli drew a two-out walk, stole second, reached third on a fielding error and scored on Brandon Polizzi's single through the left side.

Both teams scored a run in the fifth inning. San Bernardino used back-to-back extra base hits to break the 1-1 tie and the Toros responded in their half with Polizzi scoring on Soteropolus' single through the left side.

The Toros scored the go-ahead in the eighth. Daryl Donerson hit a double down the left field line and Soteropulos brought him in with a single at the same direction.

Nick Suniga tossed six innings striking out four batters and allowing an earned run. Cy Scott went the rest of the way allowing three hits for his first win as a Toro.

Cory Peterson took the loss for the Coyotes after allowing the go-ahead run in the eighth. Starter Don Sullivan fanned five and allowed an earned run in 5.1 innings.

Game 2 – CSUDH 5, CSUSB 3
Making only his second career start at CSUDH, Etchebarren tossed five innings allowing two earned runs and striking out three. Jacob Musial took over in the sixth and went the rest of the way tossing hitless frames for his first save.

The Coyotes, once again, jumped ahead in the first inning by plating two runs. The Toros did get the two runs back in similar fashion with Hokuf reaching and Ortega driving him in in the second and fourth innings. In fact, both Ortega's RBI were on doubles.

CSUDH took the lead and added more in the fifth. Evan Yeager led off with a single and stole second. Donerson would break the tie on a RBI triple down the right field line and Soteropolus cashed in the insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Matthew Moriarty went from start to finish allowing four earned runs on six hits and two walks. He did strikeout four.

Before the Toros head north to Turlock for the weekend, they will head south to San Diego to play at Point Loma Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Sea Lions swept the doubleheader at Toro Field last month. The two ballclubs will be playing their makeup game April 25.
