Toros and Hawks Both Win to Split Four-Game Series

ALAMEDA – Having to sit out Saturday due to weather, the Cal State Dominguez Hills and Holy Names baseball teams got two more games in Sunday with each team taking a win to split the four-game non-conference series.

The Hawks walked off game one with a two-run ninth inning while the Toros saw left-hander Joe Mercado struck out nine in six in his CSUDH debut that helped the Cardinal and Gold salvage the afternoon cap 6-2.

Game 1 – HNU 7, CSUDH 6
Trailing 2-1 after four innings, the Toros were down to the last out in the fifth and a fielding error by the Hawks allowed the inning to not only continue but to load the bases. Adrian Guzman punished the Hawks for the mistake by hitting a bases-clearing double to left to take a 4-2 lead.

CSUDH got another unearned run across in the eighth. Daryl Donerson doubled and scored when Brandon Polizzi reached on a two-out throwing error. The Toros took a 6-5 lead in the ninth inning when a double by Mathew Annunziata plated Esteban Ortega.

The Hawks laid out the pieces in the ninth inning with the first two runners on. They then used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. A wild pitch would tie the game and a RBI single gave the Hawks the win.

Jacob Musial threw 97 pitches in seven innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Game 2 – CSUDH 6, HNU 2
Mercado had an excellent start to his Toro career. Along his nine strikeouts, he conceded two walks and hits each on 96 pitches.

Annunziata started the scoring off in the second inning with a solo shot to left. The Toros added two more in the fourth inning. Donerson and Morelli each had a hit to bring in Parker Hokuf and Guzman, respectively.

HNU did answer back with two runs in its half of the inning.

The game was put out of the Hawks reach in the seventh and final inning, when John Soteropulos hit a three-run homer.

CSUDH will play a three-game series with Cal Baptist this weekend. Game one in Riverside is Thursday at 6 p.m. The Toros will open their home schedule against the Lancers Friday at 2 p.m. The series comes to a close Saturday at CBU.
