LAS VEGAS, Nev – The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team had a rough morning trying to contain No. 14 Central Washington's powerful offense resulting in a 3-21 loss. Nonetheless, the Toros would shake it off to take game two from Concordia Irvine 9-4.
Game 1 – CWU 21, CSUDH 3 (5 innings)
Central Washington (3-0) jumped on the scoreboard first, pushing three runs across in the top of the first inning. The Toros did answer back in the bottom half with two runs.
Jasmin Guzman led off the game with a single to left field on an 0-2 count and scored following a
Madison Murphy double to center field. Once
Lyzette Reveles reached base on a walk, Rachel Sandoval drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center.
After an explosive 16-run inning for CWU, Murphy picked up her second homerun of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Game 2 – CSUDH 9, CUI 4
Concordia (2-1) attacked first, scoring one run in both the third and fourth innings.
The Toros (1-2) would bat around the line-up in the top of the fifth, scoring seven runs in the process.
Kendelle Messersmith began the rally with a double to right field that scored
Jade Loe, who led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Murphy also doubled to right field bringing in Messersmith.
After a pitching change by the Eagles, CSUDH earned five straight free bases via a hit-by-pitch to Sandoval and walks to Annalisa Nicholson, Reveles,
Damari Simon and Loe, having three runs cross home plate and forcing another pitching change.
An error by CUI's first baseman allowed two more Toros to score.
The freshman pitcher Loe went the distance for the Cardinal and Gold, picking up her first complete game of the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills will wrap up play from Las Vegas Sunday, taking on Hawai`i Hilo at 11:30 a.m. and Concordia Portland at 2 p.m.
