Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits Twinbill with Holy Names on Opening Day

ALAMEDA – With concern that the Bay Area weather might prevent the baseball season-opener from happening Friday, Cal State Dominguez Hills and host Holy Names got two games in and each team took a win.

CSUDH slugged its way to a 12-5 win in game one while Holy Names claimed the nightcap 2-1 on a walkoff homer in the 11th.

Game 1 – CSUDH 12, HNU 5
It was a big day for No. 1 & 2 hitters Brandon Polizzi and Division I transfer John Soteropulos, who combined for six hits including three doubles and a home run. Parker Hokuf was another key contributor after a four-hit, three RBI game.

Joe Bresson earned the win after conceding three earned runs in five innings. He also struck out four.

After the Hawks got three runs across to take a 4-3 lead after three, the Toros not only erased the lead but did all the damage in the inning. With Polizzi and Soteropulos on base and one out, Miguel Castaneda, Esteban Ortega and Hokuf each knocked in a run and scored on Adrian Guzman's single to take an 8-3 lead.

Game 2 – HNU 2, CSUDH 1 (11 Innings)
Both teams had scored a run within the first two innings. Polizzi opened the game with a double down the left field line and Soteropulos drove him in with a base hit up the middle.

One inning later the Hawks evened the score with two one-out singles to the outfield.

Nick Suniga had quite a Toro debut on the mound, striking out 10 and allowing one walk in 6.2 innings. His opposite, Aiden McIntyre, also fanned 10 but did issue any free passes in eight innings.

The Toros had the best chances in the 10th and 11th innings when they had the potential go-ahead run on third.

HNU's Nick Snyder opened the inning hitting the walkoff homer to split the doubleheader.

Both teams will look to finish the four-game series Saturday with game one set for noon.
