Cal Poly Pomona Walks Off in Game Two to Sweep Toros in CCAA Season Opener

POMONA – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team came close to snapping a long losing streak after forcing extra innings against Cal Poly Pomona, but the Broncos snuck away with an walkoff in the eighth to take the twinbill and sweep the CCAA season-opening series Saturday.

The pair of losses now bumps the Toros (2-11, 0-4 CCAA) losing skid to nine as they now turn their attention to crosstown rival Cal State LA starting Thursday at 2 p.m. in Carson.

Game 1 – CPP 7, CSUDH 4
It was the Toros who struck first in the second inning. Parker Hokuf led off with a single, advanced to second on Esteban Ortega's deep flyout to right and scored on Daryl Donerson's double.

The lead didn't last long though as the Broncos answered back with two runs on three hits. Cal Poly Pomona would knock left-hander Joe Mercado out of the game in the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning.

CSUDH did get to within one in the seventh. Hokuf again led off with a single and reached third on Miguel Castaneda's double. Donerson brought them both home with a double for his second hit of the game. Brandon Polizzi brought his fellow outfielder in with a RBI single to make it a 5-4 deficit.

Cal Poly Pomona got two of those runs back in its half of the inning.

Cy Scott conceded two runs in 3.2 innings of relief. Joshua Gogue pitched a shutout eighth inning.

Kyle Dohy appeared to be in control of the Toro lineup, allowing the one run along with four hits and a walk in six innings. Ryan Alsworth went the rest of the way allowing three runs for the save.

Game 2 – CPP 5, CSUDH 4 (8 Innings)
The Broncos struck early on Jacob Musial by scoring a run in the first inning on a fielding error.

CSUDH got the equalizer across in the third inning. Brandon Polizzi reached on a two-out walk and scored when Adrian Guzman reached on an error in right field. CPP answered back in its half of the inning with an RBI single by Jason Padlo.

After John Soteropulos drove in Donerson in the fifth to cut the difference to one, the Toros erased it completely in the seventh inning. Nick Morelli and Brandon Polizzi got on base with base hits and Soteropulos drove them in with a RBI single and tie the game 4-4.

Gogue tried to keep the game going in the eighth inning but the Kyle Candalla hit a two-out triple and Nic Hernandez knocked him in with a single for the win.

Musial surrendered the four runs on eight hits and four walks in six innings. He did strike out four.

Rigo Fernandez pitched a shutout seventh inning.
