Golden Eagles Soar Away in Middle Innings to Take Game 1 From Toros

CARSON – Parker Hokuf had a pair of hits and RBIs each but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team was outslugged by its crosstown rival Cal State LA as the Golden Eagles opened a four-game CCAA series pounding the Toros 11-5 Friday afternoon.

The Toros are still in search for first third win of the season as they have now dropped 10 straight.

Although the Golden Eagles out-hit the Toros 17-10, six of them were for extra bases, including a leadoff homer in the sixth.

Errors also continue to haunt the Cal State Dominguez Hills ballclub as three of the four total came in the third inning, which had allowed the Golden Eagles to drive in four unearned runs. Cal State LA added five more runs in the next three innings to take a 10-1 lead.

After the Golden Eagles struck first with a run in the first, the Toros had countered with one of their own in their half of the inning. Brandon Polizzi, who started at second base for the first time in more than two years after playing his usual center field, led off with a walk, reached second on a throwing error during a double play attempt and scored on Hokuf's opposite RBI single to left.

The Toros had a brief momentum going in the seventh inning. Polizzi drew his second walk with one out and Adrian Guzman followed with a single to put runners at the corners. John Soteropulos knocked in Polizzi with a double which ended Christian Broussard's day on the mound and Hokuf brought in Guzman with a groundout. After Miguel Castaneda earned a two-out walk, Mathew Annunziata hit a 2-run double to right center to cut the score to 11-5.

Broussard, who was pulling double duties, went 6.1 innings allowing three earned runs while striking out five. At the plate, he went 1-for-5 with a RBI double in the first inning.

Joe Bresson surrendered three earned runs in his short outing. He was taken out in the fourth inning after throwing 90 pitches.

The series shifts to LA for a twinbill Friday starting at 1 p.m.
