Baseball Falls to Broncos Despite Strong Pitching Effort from Joe Bresson

CARSON – Joe Bresson allowed one earned run in seven solid innings of work, but errors became costly again for the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team as Cal Poly Pomona got four unearned runs across, including a tie-breaking three in the seventh, to post an 8-3 win over the Toros in game two of the CCAA season-opening series Friday.

Despite three-hit games each from outfielders Brandon Polizzi and Daryl Donerson, the rest of the Toro lineup was held to just three hits total.

The Broncos got off to an early start in the first inning thanks to a fielding error and a stolen base that was cashed in when Nic Hernandez singled down the right field line scoring the runner from second.

The Broncos added another run in the top half of the second inning. A sacrifice bunt from Jacob Bernardy was enough to score Frankie Nogales from third, who lead the inning off with a double.

It would take the Toros until the fifth inning to get their offense going, as Donerson began the inning with a double to right center. Polizzi then singled him home after a sacrifice bunt from Trevor North. John Soteropulos was then able to get Polizzi home from third with a sacrifice fly.

The game was tied up until the seventh inning when the Broncos took the lead. Three walks got things going for the opposition and all three men would score via an error and a two RBI double from Daniel Pitts.

The Toros were able to fight back with a run in the eighth inning but it was not enough to make a comeback as the Broncos added another three runs in the ninth.

The series now heads to Pomona with a doubleheader against the Broncos which begins on Saturday Feb. 25, at 12 p.m. The Toros will look to even the series at two games each.
