Toros Send Seniors Off With a Win on Senior Night

CARSON -- Led by four Cal State Dominguez Hills players scoring in double figures including senior Simone Thompson's 16, the Toros made sure their four upperclassmen finished their final game in the Torodome with a win after upending visiting Cal State San Marcos by a 72-68 count in front of a spirited Torodome crowd.

Offensively, CSUDH was led by Jocelyne Diaz, who had 17 of the Toros 34 points in the paint, outscoring the Cougars' post players by a 38-24 count. The Toros had four players score in double figures, with Destinee Williams equaling Thompson's 16 and adding nine rebounds. Breanna DuBois had 13 points and seven rebounds including two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left that accounted for the final score.

Behind Thompson, who also collected seven assists and six rebounds while running the offense as the floor general, the Toros jumped to a 37-27 halftime lead after shooting 46.2 percent from the field.

With Thompson providing the offensive spark for CSUDH, Lisa Rhett showed her leadership and composure with a feisty seven point, seven rebound performance.

CSUSM was led by Dee Armenta, who had 19 points with 15 of them coming from beyond the arc. CSUDH was able to hold CSUSM's leading scorer in Savannah Camp to a dismal 36.8 percent from the field, but Camp still managed to score 18 points and collect nine rebounds.

In a game of runs CSUDH pulled away in the second quarter, outscoring the Cougars 17-8. The Toros held off a late rally by the Cougars, who outscored the Toros 27-18 in the fourth and decisive quarter.

With the victory, CSUDH ends its six-game losing streak, with its last victory coming against Cal State LA on Jan. 28. The Toros' record moves to 7-19, 4-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSUSM falls to 13-11, 10-9 in CCAA play.

After the contest, the Toros honored seniors Imari Brown, DeLaura Castanada, Rhett and Thompson in a victorious ceremony.
