Pomona Gets Offensive in 16-4 Win to Kick Off League Play for Both Teams

CARSON -- Kicking off the California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule, perennial power and visiting Cal Poly Pomona rolled to a 16-4 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills while tallying season highs in both runs and hits, despite junior Brandon Polizzi continuing his hot start with his fifth multi-hit effort in 10 games to lead the Cardinal and Gold.

With the setback, CSUDH falls to 2-8 overall, and 0-1 in the CCAA, with CPP moving to 5-7 and 1-0 in league play.

The hosts spotted Cal Poly Pomona five runs before getting their first run on the board in the 3rd, courtesy of a Polizzi base knock to drive home Nick Morelli.

The Broncos, however, answered with a three spot in their next at-bat, and after CSUDH scored three of its own in the 6th on a line drive home run over the right field fence by Mathew Annunziata, his third long ball of the year, CPP put the game away with a five-run 7th inning after sending nine batters to the plate and facing three Toro pitchers to make the score 15-4.

CPP added a single run in the 9th to account for the final tally, withstanding a would-be Toro rally in the bottom half of the frame that saw the hosts get their first two batters on base but leave them stranded, two of 10 total runners left on base.

Polizzi finished with a 4-for-5 performance, while John Soteropulos added two hits of his own.  The heart of the line-up had a rough day at the plate, leaving eight runners on base as part of a 2-for-12 afternoon.

Nick Suniga took the loss as he lasted just 3.1 innings and allowing six earned runs, five hits and four walks to drop to 0-3 on the year, while CPP's Jeff Bain picked up the win over his 7-inning, 10-hit, 4 earned run performance.

The two teams will continue their four-game set tomorrow afternoon, with first pitch set for 2 pm on Toro Field.
