Toros Come Up Short in Twinbill Against PLNU; Friday's Games Suspended

CARSON – The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team had two chances to snap a losing skid against Point Loma Nazarene Thursday afternoon. But the Sea Lions held on to a 10-9 win in game one and rallied with a five-run ninth inning to sneak away game two 9-6 just in time before the sun had completely set.

Because the chance of rain Friday increased to 100 percent according to weather.com, the doubleheader the two teams were going to play has been postponed and reduced to a single game April 25 at 3 p.m.

With Mother Nature suspending this series, the Toros will now look to starting CCAA play against defending regular season champions Cal Poly Pomona. The Toros will play host Thursday (12 p.m.) and Friday (2 p.m.; Think Pink) before the series wraps up at the Broncos Saturday (doubleheader; 10:30 a.m.).

Game 1 – PLNU 10, CSUDH 9
Game one turned out to be a slugfest as both teams combined for 34 hits. The Toros, who trailed the entire contest, had the best chance in tying the game in the ninth. Mathew Annunziata was jammed on an inside pitch but came within a foot or two away from a home run to right field but instead had to settle with a double. He got to third on a fielder's choice but was left stranded.

The Sea Lions struck early and often against right-hander Nick Suniga as they hit their way to a 6-run lead by the end of the third inning.

The Toros had their chances early on with leadoff singles to begin the first, second, and third innings but were unable to capitalize on the hot starts to the innings. The team got its first runs of the game through a single up the middle that scored two runs by outfielder Daryl Donerson.

The eighth inning saw the Toros drive in four runs and cut the deficit to one, including a single down the left field line by Infielder Miguel Castaneda which drove in second baseman John Soteropulos and Nick Morelli.

Despite allowing five runs and 14 hits, Sea Lion two-way player Kellen Sheppard got the win and had also helped himself at the plate going 1-for-4 with a walk and scoring twice.

Game 2 – PLNU 9, CSUDH 6
The Toros had found themselves behind again in the second inning when an unearned run came across without recording a hit. PLNU would take a 2-0 lead in the fourth with a walk and back-to-back RBI singles drove in the run.

CSUDH would take the lead for the first time on the day in the fifth. With runners at the corners, Donerson delivered a two-run double to right field to give CSUDH a 3-2 lead.

Although the Sea Lions responded in the sixth with a two-run single to reclaim the lead, the Toros took it back with Parker Hokuf's three-run shot to right in their half of the frame.

Joe Bresson had reached 5.1 innings on the mound striking out four and limiting three earned runs across before turning it over to Jacob Musial. The right-hander threw a scoreless seventh and eighth inning but ran into trouble trying to close it out in the ninth, quickly loading the bases and both mental and fielding mistakes allowed the Sea Lions to score five times.
