Lancers Run Away in Middle Innings to Sweep Toros in Home Opener

CARSON – Jacob Musial and Joe Mercado combined for four earned runs, two walks and seven strikeouts but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team's home opener was spoiled by No. 8 Cal Baptist as the Lancers broke away in the middle innings to a 7-1 win and sweep the three-game non-conference series Monday.

Although the Toros (2-4) had the lead first in the second inning, the Lancers (3-3) answered back and taking the lead with two unearned runs scored in the third and fourth innings and then adding four more in the fifth.

In the second inning, Esteban Ortega led off with a double down the right field line, moved to third on Parker Hokuf's single and Adrian Guzman found the gap in right center to drive in the run.

It was back-to-back inning-opening errors that benefitted the Lancers in the third and fourth innings. CBU would break the tie in the fourth without recording a hit, using an error, a stolen base, a balk and a wild pitch.

Musial was tallied for three earned runs in five innings of work. The left-hander Mercado went the rest of the way fanning five and allowing a walk and two hits.

The Toros welcome CBU's PacWest rival Point Loma to Carson for a four-game series starting Thursday at 2 p.m.
