ROHNERT PARK – Mikey Hatfield scored 17 points,
Jonathan Nichols added 14 along with 10 rebounds for a double-double, but their free throws in the end was just enough for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team to take a 64-62 road victory over Sonoma State Friday night.
After a back-and-forth battle that saw the 16 lead changes and 17 ties, the difference in the game came with 50 seconds left. Hatfield made a free throw to give his team a 63-56 lead. The Seawolves (3-4, 1-2 CCAA) made a comeback attempt in which they got back-to-back 3-pointers with 16 seconds remaining. Nichols made a free throw to make it a two-point game shortly after.
Armani Nichols, who finished with 15 points and 11 boards, made one last effort for Sonoma State by shooting a game-winning 3-point attempt that hit the rim.
The Toros had shot 40 percent throughout the night, the Seawolves hit 42 percent of their field goals.
Neither team had a double-digit lead. Dominguez Hills led by as many as eight at the midpoint of the first half while Sonoma had led by three.
The two teams will meet again at the Torodome on January 13, but in the meantime, the Toros will cross the Golden Gate Bridge to play San Francisco State Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
