HONOLULU – Freshman Malcolm Johnson scored a season-high 24 points, including a layup that gave the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team the lead with 10 seconds to go, but Adams State got the eventual winning basket with 4.1 ticks left to escape with an 83-82 win over the Toros Friday night.
Johnson also grabbed 17 rebounds to complete a double-double for the second consecutive game. Fellow freshmen Colten Kresl and Deshay Gipson scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, while senior
Jonathan Nichols had 11 to go with six assists.
Although the Toros (2-5) shot 48.3 percent from the field and had a 38-35 edge in rebounding, it was points off turnovers that hurt them the most. The Grizzlies (1-4) scored 27 off CSUDH's 18 mistakes.
The Toros had led by as many as 18 on two different occasions in the first half. The Grizzlies would go on a 20-3 run that started 1:10 before halftime to take a 50-49 lead with 15:52 to go.
Johnson carried the Toros within the final 6:30 by scoring all 16 of their points.
Shortly after the Grizzlies got the eventual game-winning layup in, the Toros had one final chance with
Jonathan Nichols shooting a deep 3 that just missed.
Before they return to the Mainland Sunday night, the Toros will pay a visit to Chaminade. Tipoff is at 4:30 p.m. PST.
