CARSON –
Claire Autry hit .283 with 18 kills and five errors to close out her career inside the Torodome and Cal State Dominguez Hills wrapped up the volleyball regular season with a four-set (25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 27-25) victory over Cal State San Marcos on a Saturday night in which a win was needed to keep the Toros in the postseason hunt.
The Toros complete the regular season 14-12 overall and 10-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association to place themselves in a three-way tie for third place with Cal State LA and UC San Diego. After looking through the manual and going over the tiebreaking procedure, the conference office ruled that Cal State LA got the fourth seed based on the highest ratio of sets won compared to sets loss for ALL conference matches. The Golden Eagles ratio was 1.127, the Toros 1.121.
On a night in which CSUDH honored seniors Autry,
Hailey Smith,
Bridget Heins,
Rylee Kiger and
Morelia Castro, the Toros at least sent the seniors off in their final home match with a thriller. Dominguez Hills had rebounded from what was an ugly start to the second set and winning the next two after intermission.
The fourth round was perhaps the most heart-pounding moment of them all. The Cougars (14-11, 11-6 CCAA) had game-point (25-24) after trailing by two on as many occasions late in the game, but the Toros got three straight points on a ball-handling error and kills from
Tati Yandall and Autry to lock up the match win.
Yandall finished with 10 kills and nine digs,
Cathryn Lopez made 22 digs to go along with her three assists and Kiger set up for 30 kills.
