Yandall, Smith Lead Volleyball to Win Over Broncos

CARSON – Tati Yandall hit .344 on the night, Hailey Smith recorded a double-double for the second consecutive night as the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team bested Cal Poly Pomona in four sets (25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 25-20) at the Torodome Saturday night.

The win snaps the Toros' two-match skid and improves them to 7-9 overall, 3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Yandall and Smith both committed only two errors at just over 30 attempts. While they were the only Toros to reach double figures in kills, Claire Autry came up one short from joining the club. Rylee Kiger dished out 21 assists and freshman Jordan Ramirez was credited for 17.

Although Dominguez Hills lost out the dig column, 71-55, Cathryn Lopez made 15 saves to lead the team. Cecelia Lucas had a good night on the defense as well, making six blocks, including three by herself. Autry and Morelia Castro each made four block assists.

Cal Poly Pomona (8-9, 4-5 CCAA) came to Carson with a lot of confidence after beating both No. 23 Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State LA throughout the week. But Saturday proved to be different as the Broncos hit only .096. Alexandra Gresham averaged .323 on the attack and Andrea Bosnic got a double-double with 14 kills and 18 digs.

Smith's best performance on the night came in the first game, when she tallied five kills on 14 attempts. The Toros hit .295 in that round.

The set-three loss was more of a defensive game for CSUDH as it got 12 of the 20 digs from the combination of Kiger and Lopez.

The Broncos had one final rally going in the fourth game after getting back-to-back points on Toro errors, but Autry's attack landed on the back line to give CSUDH the win.

CSUDH hits the road for the next four matches, starting with first-place UC San Diego Tuesday at 7 p.m.
