CARSON –
Cathryn Lopez made a dozen digs to become the fifth Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball player to reach the millennium mark in her career as the Toros stunned North Division-leading Sonoma State in five sets (25-23, 15-25, 15-25, 25-20, 15-13) at the Torodome Friday night.
The Toros are definitely playing with confidence as of late, having won four straight matches and 5-of-6 to improve the overall record to 11-10 and 7-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Demons also were erased as it was the Toros first win against Sonoma State since 2006.
Since shattering the single-season record for digs her freshman year, Lopez is way ahead of schedule to break Veronica Diaz's (1998-01) all-time record of 1,090 career digs. But for now, she will look at the No. 4 spot held by Melanie Rea (1992-95) at 1,028.
Here is what Lopez had to say about her milestone and the match win:
Hailey Smith also had a career night making a personal-best 23 defensive saves while
Jordan Ramirez got 17 assists on her birthday.
It was another big night for
Tati Yandall on both ends of play, recording 20 kills and 13 digs for her ninth double-double of the year.
Claire Autry made 10 kills and
Rylee Kiger dished out 26 assists.
Although the Toros got the edge, 25-23, in the first game, the Seawolves (15-6, 9-3 CCAA) took a 2-1 match lead after back-to-back 25-15 wins. CSUDH jumped in front in both the fourth and fifth rounds to take the lead and had held on to it the rest of the way.
The Toros will welcome San Francisco State for 'Think Pink' Night at the Torodome Saturday. Donations will be greatly accepted at the ticket table for breast cancer research. First serve is at 7 p.m.
