CARSON -- Knowing what's at stake in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship race, both Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chico State ended up with a stalemate in a nil-nil tie at Toro Stadium Thursday night, putting possibly a dent to the top of the newly-formatted conference standings.
Â
Because matches were lost due to the tragic fires in Northern California, the 13-team conference agreed to
change the format of the standings from points total to average points per match average. Be sure to visit
www.goccaa.org to learn more about the standings once all the men's soccer matches are complete and conference office officially averages each teams average.
Â
To increase their chances of having one of the two first round byes and avoid either host or play on the road in the first round Tuesday, the Toros (11-4-2, 8-2-1 CCAA) must beat Stanislaus State on the final day Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Â
Dominguez Hills and Chico (10-4-2, 8-1-2 CCAA) played a physical matchup from start to finish as a combined eight yellow cards were issued, including two on Wildcat Jeremiah Johnson which sent him off in the 89th minute.
Â
The Toros dominated the attack category with 23-7 in total shots, nine of which were on goal but stopped by Damion Lewis.
Â
Chase Gentry made four saves to earn his eighth shutout on the year.
Â
Perhaps the best chance the Toros had on netting the golden goal was in the 101st minute, when
Abel Hinojosa's left foot shot inside the goal box missed the right post by a few feet. Hinojosa would get a couple of shots in a few minutes after but were stopped by Lewis.
Â
Before kicking off against the Warriors, the Toros will honor their 2017 senior class.
