Hailey Smith dug for a season-high 16, and the Cal State Dominguez Hills volleyball team escape the Kelp Bed with a five-set (26-24, 17-25, 25-14, 15-25, 15-13) win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday night.
The Toros get their third win in four contests to improve to 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Claire Autry may not have hit the .500 mark like she did at Cal State LA last week but the senior did hit .333 tonight, tallying 11 kills and committing one error on 30 attempts. Fourteen was the number of the day for
Tati Yandall, for it was the number of kills and digs she reached and
Cathryn Lopez prevented 20 balls from hitting the hardwood.
Monterey Bay (11-8, 5-6 CCAA) relied on Amber Tygart and Maddy Underwood to lead the effort on the attack. While the Toros as a team hit .224, Underwood made 20 kills and Tygart had 18.
CSUDH had to dig itself out of an early hole to start the match after falling behind 7-2. The only lead for the Toros came in the end, when Yandall got a kill to make it a 25-24 score. An Otter error gave the Toros the opening set win.
After each team claimed a set win after intermission, the Otters started the deciding game with a 4-1 lead. The Toros trailed for a majority of the game but took a Yandall kill tied it at 12 apiece. CSUDH would eventually win on two Otter errors and a Autry kill.
The Toros end the four-match road trip in Hayward against Cal State East Bay Saturday. First serve is at 7 p.m.
