CSUDH Upsets No. 25 Golden Eagles on Last Minute Goal From Vargas

CARSON -- With 47 seconds remaining in regulation, Adam Vargas hit a free kick from the left side that found the net to give the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team a 3-2 upset win over No. 25 Cal State LA in a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matchup, Wednesday night at Toro Stadium.

With the win, the Toros improve to 9-3-1 overall and 6-1 in the CCAA, now holding a share of first place with 18 points. The Golden Eagles are 9-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.

CSULA struck first with a goal from Julian Zamora in the 28th minute. CSUDH didn't take long to find an answer. Just 42 seconds later at 28:37, Vargas found Leonardo Nogueira at the top of the box. Nogueira then hit a laser into the top right corner for the equalizer.

The Toros took the lead, 2-1, in the 79th minute. Angel Ayala's cross from the right side was flicked by Emmanuel Corona. Carlos Torres Jr. made a run on the ball and slotted it home into the lower right corner to give CSUDH its first lead of the match. The resilient Golden Eagles did not back down as they evened the score in the 88th minute on a goal from Rigoberto Maciel.

The Toros were given a free kick from the left side around 35-yards out in the 90th minute. Vargas lifted the free kick and bounced it to the right of CSULA goalie Steven Barrera's outstretched arms.

CSUDH Goalkeeper Chase Gentry amassed seven saves.

The Toros will host San Francisco State inside the StubHub Center's main field on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
