Toros Survive Marathon Thriller in 3-2 win Over SF State

SAN FRANCISCO - Senior Vanessa Phyakeo belted 15 kills as Cal State Dominguez Hills survived a furious San Francisco State would-be comeback attempt en route to a 3-2 win over the Gators in The Swamp to pick up its second-straight win.

Phyakeo misfired on just five attacks as she hit .323 for the night, also adding 12 digs and her lone ace of the night on match point as the Toros improved to 5-8, 2-3 CCAA in the 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 17-15 decision.  SFSU, meanwhile, falls to 1-11, 0-4 CCAA.

The Toros continued their trend of cleaner play, making nine less errors than the Gators in the win and marking the third-straight match in which CSUDH has made fewer mistakes than its opponents.

CSUDH also tallied more kills (+1), blocks (+5), assists (+2) and digs (+8), while SFSU found success at the service line, serving 11 more aces than the Cardinal and Gold.

SFSU took control early, taking 6-2 and 17-13 leads.  Behind Phyakeo's serve, however, the Toros roared back to knot the score seven times beginning at 18-all, before Morelia Castro gave the Toros set point and a Gator error providing the set-winner.

The Toros continued their momentum in the second, turning an 11-10 lead into a 19-12 lead behind Cathryn Lopez's serve en route to a 25-21 win and two sets to none lead.

After the break, SFSU used its home court advantage to stay alive by securing a close win, and used CSUDH's .051 hitting percentage in the fourth to force a fifth set.

In the finale, SFSU looked to come all the way back, taking an 8-5 lead before the teams switched sides.

A SFSU service error provided the momentum for the visitors, with a Cecelia Lucas kill and three-straight Gator errrors putting the Toros on top 10-9.

SFSU tied the set at 10, with the two teams staying even at 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, before Phyakeo took over with her final kill of the night on SFSU's serve to give the Toros match point, and doing the honors herself with an ace to close the contest.

Claire Autry added 13 kills and Bridget Heins nine, with Lucas and Castro leading the block party with a combined 11.

Defensively, the Toros boasted four players with at least 10 digs in Kylie Osgood (15), Phyakeo (12), Lopez (11) and Antonette Rolda (10).

CSUDH will look to make it three-straight tomorrow night, traveling to defending CCAA Champion Sonoma State for a 7 pm first serve.
