Defending CCAA Champs Look Prime For Another Run After Sweep of Toros

ROHNERT PARK -- Defending California Collegiate Athletic Association Champion Sonoma State showed why it received the most points and first-place votes in a preseason poll of CCAA coaches, taking just 85 minutes to sweep past Cal State Dominguez Hills in a league tilt.

A key player in yesterday's five-set win over San Francisco State, Vanessa Phyakeo again led the Toro with seven kills while Bridget Heins (pictured) posted a team-best .400 hitting percentae with five kills and just one attack error, but it wasn't nearly enough in the 25-11, 25-17, 25-17 defeat.

Sonoma State, which improved to 5-7, 3-2 CCAA, hit .267 compared to just .074 for the visitors and won every category except at the net to snap CSUDH's modest two-match win streak as the Toros fell to 5-9, 2-5 CCAA.

After a tough four-set loss hosting Cal State LA, SSU stormed out to an 8-2 lead in the opener and never looked back, outscoring the visitors 17-9 to coast to the set one win.

CSUDH made it a game in set two, getting to within 10-7 on a pair of Claire Autry putaways.

SSU, however, quickly regained a comfortable edge behind the serving of Calan Seitz as the lead ballooned to 16-8.  The serving of Hannah Ponce and arm of Phyakeo gave the Toros life at 18-12, but the Seawolves out pointed the Toros 7-5 down the stretch to take a two-sets-to-none lead.

It was more of the same after the break as the hosts scored the first four points, including three via service ace.

SSU's lead swelled to 10-4 early, until a Cecelia Lucas hammer and Hailey Smith ace brought the Toros to within 14-11.

Sonoma, however, reeled off six-straight points to take a 23-14 lead, all but putting the match away in the 25-17 finale.

Heins, Autry and Morelia Castro all finished with five kills, while Kylie Osgood tied for match-high honors with 16 digs.

CSUDH returns home next weekend for a pair of league matches, starting Friday against Cal State East Bay.
