CARSON -- Junior goalkeeper
Chase Gentry made nine saves to match his career high and newcomer
Emmanuel Corona delivered the match equalizer that gave No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills and Azusa Pacific a 2-2 draw in the Toros home opener at the StubHub Center's Field No. 3 Saturday night.
With the Cougars (0-1-1) taking 15 of their 25 total shots in the second half, Gentry made five saves to match his personal best set against Fresno Pacific in last year's NCAA Championship opening round in Seattle.
The Toros (0-1-1) were in control most of the match and got on the board with the first goal of the season thanks to a costly penalty called against Cougar keeper Tyler Jaramillo in the 43rd minute. The referee called a handball on Jaramillo after he was outside his jurisdiction to use his hands, and while the Cougars were protesting the call, newcomer
Mariano Pantoja took the free kick from the top of the key and slotted it into the goal.
Azusa Pacific came back from the intermission with a different look, having dominated the Toros offensively. The Cougars quickly grabbed the lead in the span of four minutes. Caleb Canderlaria knocked the loose ball inside a crowded box into the goal in the 72nd minute and Tim Ogunniyi put the Cougars ahead with a shot off a corner kick in the 75th.
The lead lasted only four minutes as Corona scored the equalizer from the right side following a cross from
Joey Chica.
CSUDH took 14 shots, five of which were on goal.
The Toros make a return trip to Nampa, Idaho for the second consecutive season, taking on host Northwest Nazarene Thursday and fellow guest Hawai`i Hilo Saturday.
