Resilient Toros Sweep Past Broncos After Last Night's Tough Loss

CARSON -- Whatever words of encourgement head coach Jen Adeva offered to her team after last night's tough 4-set defeat at the hands of No. 13 CS San Bernardino worked wonders as Cal State Dominguez Hills swept past visiting Cal Poly Pomona to pick up its first league win of the season, snapping a four-match skid.

Junior Morelia Castro hammered home 10 kills on 13 attempts, good for a .769 percentage, as CSUDH hit .225 as a team to match its season-best effort.

After a stellar effort against the Coyotes last night went for naught, the Toros seemed to be mired in their memory aftrer three straight attack errors to open tonight's match.

A Hailey Smith successful kill preceded one by Claire Autry, with those points knocking last night's sting by the wayside.

With the Toros down 10-8, CSUDH rode six serves by Hannah Ponce and three by Cathryn Lopez to take a 17-13 lead, and never looked back, scoring the final three points of the set to take a 1-0 lead.

CSUDH continued its momentum in the second frame behind Ponce's and Lopez's serve, building a 6-1 lead.

CPP narrowed its deficit to 12-10 15 points later, but kills by Autry and Yandall gave the Toros breathing room as the hosts ultimately built their lead to 20-13 on a CPP attack error.

The visitors closed the gap to 23-22 late, but a service error and Smith kill ended the set and gave the Toros a 2-0 lead.

After the break, the Toros continued to keep pressure on CPP as the Broncos opened the third with three straight errors.

The green and gold, however, would not go down without a fight, forging eight ties down the stretch, and holding set point at 24-22 to force a Toro timeout.

That hiatus allowed CSUDH to catch its collective breath as a pair of Bronco errors knotted the set at 24-all, with a Castro kill giving the Toros their first match point, and the final of CPP's 24 attack errors giving CSUDH the sweep.

Autry led the Toros with 11 kills, while Yandall pitched in 10 in the win.  Antonette Rolda assisted on 38 points while Kylie Osgood saved 12 balls, with Rolda and Lopez chipping in eight saves each.

The Toros hit the road for CCAA play next weekend, starting with a Friday night clash at San Francisco State.
