Toros Give No. 13 Coyotes All They Can Handle in 3-1 Setback

CARSON -- Playing its most complete set of the young season thus far, Cal State Dominguez Hills took it to No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino to kick off tonight's CCAA action, but the veteran and season Coyote squad returned the favor in the second before pulling out the final two contests in frenetic fashion to take a 3-1 (15-25, 25-11, 25-23, 26-24) win.

Hailey Smith led the hosts with 11 kills as the Toros drop to 3-8 overall and 0-3 in the CCAA, and continue to look for their first win against CSUSB since the 1992 season, a string of 47 straight matches without a victory.

The Toros opened the match on fire, hammering seven kills with just one miscue, hitting .286 in the frame with four blocks and three aces compared to 10 errors, zero blocks and a .032 hitting percentage for the Yotes.

Kylie Osgood continued her strong serve with four consecutive points, with serves by Hannah Ponce and Cathryn Lopez accounting for the six of the eight final points in the frame.

CSUSB returned the favor in the second frame with a resounding 25-11 win, and took a 2-1 lead after taking a 25-23 set three decision.

In the fourth, the Coyotes took an early 5-2 lead, only to have the Toros show their mettle by clawing back to knot the game at 5-5.

The teams then tied 10 more times in the set, the last on a Tati Yandall hammer to even the score at 24-24.

That proved to be CSUDH's last hurrah, however, as All-American Malika O'Brien gave the Yotes match point, and a CSUSB solo block ended the set and the match.

Yandall added 10 kills and Claire Autry nine, while Yandall and Osgood shared team-high honors with 13 digs each.

After making 67 errors last weekend in a pair of losses, CSUDH made just 16 tonight, compared to 25 by the visitors.  The Toros also won the battle of the block (+6) and service aces (+2), but were downed in kills (-16) and digs (-8).

CSUDH will look to pick up its first CCAA win of the year tomorrow night as Cal Poly Pomona visits the Torodome after being swept by Cal State LA earlier tonight.
