Toros Can't Find Equalizer in Loss to Concordia Irvine

CARSON -- Elisa Martin made five saves but the first goal allowed in regulation by the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team was the difference in the Toros 1-0 defeat to Concordia Irvine in the non-conference finale Thursday.

The Toros drop to 5-2-0 overall as they now finish the regular-season in CCAA play.

The Eagles (4-0-1) handed the Toros their first goal in regulation in the sixth minute. McKenna CaRillo dribbled to the top of the box where her shot to the left side was out of a diving Elisa Martin's reach.

The Toros were in search of an offensive spark in the first half and found it after a few substitutions, the Toros went the rest of the half having outshot the Eagles 9-5 heading into the break.

Concordia was in control of the second half and missed a couple of chances in adding on to its lead. In fact, several Eagle shots deflected off the crossbar.

The first of two CSUDH's best chances in scoring the equalizer came in the 78th minute. Kelly Garzon took a shot from the top of the box but the 5-5 CUI keeper Jazmin Alvarez made a perfectly timed dive to get her hands for the save. Shortly later, Lauren Hall placed a perfect corner kick but the header by Dana Dibble just went wide.

The second and perhaps the best chance for the Toros to tie the match was in the 86th minute. Garzon broke away from midfield to setup a 1-v-1 matchup with Alvarez. But the Concordia broke the rhythm out of the box to halt the threat.

CSUDH edged Concordia in shots overall 14-13.

Following the weekend off, CSUDH will finish the regular-season in CCAA play starting with San Francisco State September 30. Kickoff is following the conclusion of the men's match at 7 p.m.
