Ayala's Assist, Go-Ahead Goal Lift Toros to Fifth Straight Win

CARSON -- Angel Ayala helped Joey Chica extend his scoring streak and later delivered the match-winning goal that gave the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team a 2-1 edge over Concordia Irvine Thursday evening.

The Toros have now won five straight and are unbeaten in their last six to improve to 5-1-1 overall.

Benito Gonzalez perhaps the busiest day between the post in his CSUDH career, having to make eight saves on Concordia's 17 shots. The Toros, meanwhile, took 17 shots with four on goal.

CSUDH got itself quickly on the board in brilliant fashion. In just 1:19 into the contest, Ayala fed a pass into the box perfectly placed for Chica to head it into the goal for his team-leading seventh in five matches.

Concordia (1-1-2) responded to that goal in the 20th minute, Jose Huerta delivered a cross into the box where Connor Gordon beat Gonzalez to net the equalizer.

Both teams ended up finishing with eight shots in the opening half.

Although the match got much more physical, especially during the second half, Ayala broke the 1-1 tie in the 51st minute when he fired a loose ball from the top of the box into the goal.

The Toros avoided a costly mistake in the 64th minute, when Gordon took an uncontested shot from the left side that hit the right post.

Concordia also had a close chance in the final five minutes when a setup inside the crowded box found the hands of Gonzalez on the ground.

CSUDH concludes its non-conference play against crosstown foes No. 13 Cal State LA Saturday. The match has been relocated to StubHub Center Field #3. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
