Toros Open CCAA Play With Huge Win Over Stanislaus State

CARSON -- Cal State Dominguez Hills junior Abigail Ponce gathered a deflected shot from the penalty area in the 64th minute, and sent a screamer past Stanislaus State keeper Haley Crook for what proved to be the game-winner as the Toros took a 1-0 win over the Warriors to kick off the CCAA schedule.

In handing the visitors their first loss of the year, the Toros improve to 4-1 on the year, the best start to a season since 2011.

It looked to be a mismatch on paper after the Warriors were picked to finish 5th in a preseason poll of league head coaches and the Toros 13th, with Stanislaus taking an 8-6 lead in first-period shots as the teams headed into the half scoreless.

That all changed after intermission as CSUDH came alive, taking 7 shots while its defense held the high-powered Warrior offense to just one attempt.

In the 64th minute, Ida Eriksson found herself in position in front of the Warrior goal, but Stanislaus' keeper was up to the challenge, making one of her three saves on the day.

The deflection, however, found the feet of Ponce, who nestled her shot into the back of the net to put up a crooked number.

Toro Dana Dibble led all players with three shots, with Jada Thomas and Ponce both attempting a pair of attempts.

CSUDH keeper Elisa Martin earned the shutout win, the fourth time the Cardinal and Gold has blanked its opponent.

The Toros welcome Cal State East Bay on Sunday, with first kick set for 11:30 am.
