Toros Throw Scare Into Tritons Behind Autry's Career NIght

LA JOLLA -- Junior Claire Autry set a career-high with 16 kills on 43 swings, but host UC San Diego held off a late-charging Cal State Dominguez Hills squad tonight in RIMAC as the Tritons escaped with a 25-14, 25-18, 23-25, 27-25 win to kick off the CCAA schedule for both teams.

Fond of teams south of Carson, Autry surpassed her previous career best of 15 kills, set twice last year against Cal State San Marcos and these same Tritons.

CSUDH falls to 3-6 overall, and 0-1 in the CCAA.

After the Toros scored the match's first point, the hosts scored 10 of the next 14 points and never looked back en route to a 25-14 lead before deja vu struck all over again in set two as CSUDH scored first, only to have the Tritons reply and run away with the frame.

Set three, however, was a different story as Autry began to assert herself, hammering home five of her kills as the Toros responded with a 25-23 lead to extend the evening.

UCSD looked to seize control in the fourth, taking an early 10-7 lead on a Triton kill.  UCSD would give a point right back, however, and coupled with kills by Malerie Crenshaw, a bad set by the Tritons and a Morelia Castro service ace, CSUDH knotted the frame at 20-all.

The two teams split the next 10 points to make it 25-25 all, but a Toro attack error gave UCSD match point, and the Tritons capitalized on a Rebecca Seaberry kill to put away the pesky Toros.

CSUDH hit just .082 on the night compared to .223 for the hosts, with the Toros making 17 more attack errors than UCSD in the decision.

Tati Yandall added eight kills while Soto and Crenshaw both added six.

The Toros look to pick up their first win of the year tomorrow night, traveling to Cal State San Marcos for a 5 pm first serve.
