Men's Soccer Opens CCAA Title Defense with Double OT Win Over Stanislaus State

CARSON -- Israel Murguia's first goal of the season came at the right time for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team.

Nearly five minutes away from having to settle with a second consecutive draw against Stanislaus State, Murguia fired a shot off a deflection that found the back of the net to lift the Toros to a 2-1 win over the Warriors to open the CCAA season Friday night.

The Toros, winners of three straight contests and undefeated in the last four, improve to 3-1-1 overall while the Warriors remain winless at 0-2-3.

Joey Chica was a major contribution to the match, scoring the contest's first goal on a penalty kick in the 58th minute and was credited an assist to Murguia's goal after his shot was blocked.

Stanislaus State's lone goal was in similar fashion to the Toros match-winner. Jose Acosta took a shot that hit the crossbar but Josh Jacobs followed up winning the rebound inside the crowded penalty box and somehow found the back of the net to tie the match in the 64th minute.

The Toros offense were never silent in the match, dominating the shooting category 24-10 overall, 10-5 on goal. Goalkeeper Chase Gentry made four saves between the posts. Warrior starter Tomas Zajfert had three saves to his name before a collision in the box ended his night in the 21st minute. Emerson Lovato went the rest of the way making five saves.

CSUDH's season-long six-match homestand continues Sunday with Cal State East Bay visiting Toro Stadium. Kickoff is at 2 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's match.

The Pioneers rally against Cal State L.A. came up just short as the Golden Eagles hung on to win 4-3.
