Sea Lions Strike Early in Second Half to Take Season Opener From No. 13 Toros

SAN DIEGO -- The No. 13 Cal State Dominguez Hills men's soccer team took 14 shots, six of which were on goal, but came up empty as Point Loma Nazarene scored twice to defeat the Toros, 2-0, in the season-opener Thursday evening.

It is the second consecutive time the Toros have fallen to the Sea Lions to start the season, falling 3-0 at Toro Stadium a year ago. In addition, the Toros are 1-2-1 in the last four season openers, all against Point Loma Nazarene.

The Sea Lions did all the scoring in the second half, breaking the ice 1:33 into the period and adding the insurance goal in the 81st minute.

Three Toros led the effort offensively with veteran Bruno Montini and newcomers Emmanuel Corona, Angel Ayala each tallying three of the team's 14 shots.

Goalkeeper Chase Gentry had stopped three of the Sea Lions' six shots on goal.

Point Loma Nazarene's first goal came from Eduardo Gallardo, who with help from Patrice Glaser found the back of the net off a free kick from 12 yards out.

Jorge Navarro provided the insurance policy in the 81st minute after taking a shot from a crowded box.

Although the Toros will open the home schedule Saturday against Azusa Pacific, they will not kickoff at Toro Stadium as the contest has been moved to the StubHub Center's Field #3. The match is still set for a 7 p.m. start.
