POMONA — Brady Conlan went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and Joe Bresson tossed a complete-game for the second consecutive start, but No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona broke a three-run tie in the fifth that proved to be the difference in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 4-3 defeat on a chilly Friday evening.
The loss, along with Cal State San Bernardino's win over Cal State L.A. earlier in the day, has ended the Toros hopes of a berth to the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship next week. With two games remaining in the regular-season, CSUDH will use that day to honor its seven-member senior class. First pitch of the twinbill against the Broncos is at noon.
Bresson (4-4) got off to a sluggish start in which the Broncos (33-14, 25-10) scored three times in the first inning. But the right hander settled down and went on to finish the night allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out four.
The Toros went to work immediately against senior left-hander Max Bethell with Brandon Polizzi leading off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Miguel Castaneda's RBI single through the left side.
Cal Poly Pomona also struck as soon as it got its hands on the bats, using three doubles and a single to score in three.
CSUDH erased the two-run deficit in the second inning. Adrian Padilla led off with a single and after the next two retired on flyouts, Polizzi got on base again with a base hit to left center and Brady Conlan drove the two runs hitting a double on the first pitch he saw to tie the game 3-3.
Bresson retired nine straight until the fifth inning, when another double by leadoff hitter Jared James set up for another RBI single by Jason Padlo, giving the No. 3 hitter a two-RBI night.
Since then, the Toros had trouble trying to get a runner into scoring position.
