CARSON -- Adrian Guzman erased what has been bad memories for the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team in the last three weeks and sent the Toros into the offseason with a happy ending.
After watching another lead disappear, Guzman took a pitch down the left field line deep enough for Trevor North to score from second in the Toros 6-5 game two walkoff win and salvage a doubleheader split against No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona in the regular-season finale Saturday.
The win snaps the Toros 10-game losing streak, which included the Broncos winning game one, 8-2, after a six-run in the 10th.
Game 1 - CPP 8, CSUDH 2
Tied 2-2 heading into extras, the Broncos (34-15, 22-28 CCAA) not only broke the tie but added all six of their runs in the 10th without recording a hit. Three different Toro pitchers combined for five hit-by-pitches and five walks to force in the runs.
The Toros (22-28, 15-24 CCAA) had an solid outing from senior southpaw Jeffrey Gogue, who despite received a no-decision carried the Cardinal and Gold into the sixth inning keeping Cal Poly Pomona scoreless in his outing. He struck out four but conceded six hits and two walks on 79 throws.
CSUDH struck first again for the second consecutive day in the opening inning. Brandon Polizzi opened up with a walk and scored with help from back-to-back singles from senior Brady Conlan and Miguel Castaneda.
The second run came in the sixth inning, when Guzman doubled down the left field line, took third on a wild pitch and scored on Daryl Donerson's perfect suicide squeeze.
Cal Poly Pomona erased that deficit the following inning. Ryan Webberly led off with a homer to left center and after Michael Zidek drew a pinch-hit walk, he took second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on leadoff man Jared James three-bagger to right center.
Bronco starter Peter Bayer was credited with a no-decision after throwing five innings allowing a run on five hits and two walks. Peter Beattie was awarded the win for his four-inning effort allowing the second run.
TyRay Gatewood, making his second appearance in three days, took the loss after exiting the 10th without recording an out.
Game 2 - CSUDH 6, CPP 5
Making his first start of the season after serving as the Toros closer, Anthony Cortez was outstanding on the mound, shutting out the Broncos in four innings while conceding four hits and two free passes.
The Toros would strike again in the first inning. Polizzi led off using his legs to win a bunt single, Castaneda put him and Polizzi into scoring position with a double and Lester Salcedo drove them both in with a single to right center.
A pair of errors in the fifth by the Broncos enabled the Toros to score an unearned run. But CPP rallied in the sixth with three runs to tie the game.
CSUDH regained the lead in its half of the frame with the bases loaded and two down. Parker Hokuf hit a fly ball to right field that drove in pinch-runner Donerson and Polizzi to give CSUDH a 5-3 lead.
CPP, once again rallied in the seventh while the Toros had struggled to recorded outs and put away the Broncos. A pair of doubles and singles each gave the Broncos hope with the tying runs coming into score.
North led off the seventh getting hit by the pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Guzman's walkoff single.
