No. 24 Chico State Takes 9-1 and 10-2 Decisions to Open Four-Game CCAA Set

CHICO -- Any momentum Cal State Dominguez Hills gained by winning its final four games of last weekend's Tournament of Champions quickly vanished as No. 24 Chico State took 9-1 and 10-2 decisions in a pair of six-inning contests to open this weekend's California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

Freshman Jacquelyn Landers drove home one of the late game's two runs for the Toros as CSUDH was limited to just four hits on the day, while host Chico State erupted for 29 hits in the sweep to drop the Toros to 13-10 overall, and 6-24 in CCAA play.

It was all Chico State to begin the double as the hosts scored seven runs in the first three innings off starter Jamie Duran, including four runs in the first inning of play.

With the game no longer in doubt, the only question was whether Wildcat starter Brooke Langeloh would no-hit the Toros for the second time this season after not allowing a hit through five innings of play.

That would-be historic moment went by the wayside in the sixth as Jazmin Guzman roped a clean single to left field with one runner on base and one out to erase the no-no, with Jazmyne Cortinas drawing a walk to load the bases and Analisa Nicholson getting plunked to bring home the lone run of the game for the Cardinal and Gold.

That was the extent of CSUDH's offense, however, as Langeloh fanned the next two batters to escape the threat, before the Wildcats answered with a pair of runs to mercy the Toros via the run rule.

Chico State continued its hot hitting in the nightcap, scoring thrice in the first two frames, while starter Haley Gilham retired the first 12 batters she faced.

In the fifth, Lyzette Reveles broke up the perfect game by drawing a walk, before Jasmine Ruiz spoiled the no-no by pulling a single through the left side.  Damari Simon then brought home CSUDH's first run with a double to the left-center gap, before Landers belted her own double one batter later to cut CSUDH's deficit to 3-2.

That was as close as the Toros would get, however, as Chico blew the game open with a 7-run sixth inning to again mercy the Toros via the run rule.

Weather permitting, the two teams look to conclude the four-game set tomorrow morning, with game one set for 11:00 am.
