Duran No-Hits Academy of Art; Toros Take Two More at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK -- Backed by an offense that scored eight runs, Cal State Dominguez Hills senior left-hander Jamie Duran held the Academy of Art without a base hit for in five innings to earn her first career no-hitter in the Toros 8-0 win over the Knights Sunday morning. Later in the day, Madison Murphy hit a solo shot in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie as the Toros walked out of Pedretti Park with an 8-3 win over Hawaii Pacific.

The Toros finish the Tournament of Champions 4-2 and will now finish the regular season in California Collegiate Athletic Association play, starting with a four-game series at Chico State Friday (1 p.m.) and Saturday (11 a.m.).  Senior Jasmine Ruiz was the lone Toro selected to the All-Tournament team after hitting .550 (11-for-20), with 6 runs scored, 7 RBI and 3 home runs.

Here is Murphy after hitting four home runs on the weekend, including two today.

Game 1 - CSUDH 8, Art U 0 (5 Innings)

The Knights had two baserunners reach on a fielding error in the second and a walk in the fourth.

While Duran had silenced the Knights bats, the Toros' had never extinguish. Madison Murphy led off for CSUDH with a home run to right center, making it the third time in as many days she circled the bases in the leadoff spot. The Toros added a second run  when Jazmyne Cortinas doubled down the left field line and scored on center fielder Jasmine Ruiz's single to short.

The Toros offense did serious damage in the third inning, despite scoring two earned runs. Analisa Nicholson drew a one-out walk and Ruiz followed with a double to put both runners in scoring position. Although Lyzette Reveles hit a single to right field to score in Nicholson, a fielding miscue had allowed Ruiz to score from second and put the shortstop to third. Reveles scored on wild pitch shortly after.

The inning had continued when another fielding error allowed Alexis Viramontes to reach and catcher Renee Galindo put the game out of reach with a two-run homer to right center.

Game 2 - CSUDH 8, HPU 3
Alyssa Valinches entered the game looking to build off the impressive outing against Hawaii Hilo 24 hours ago. She found herself trailing 1-0 after the leadoff hitter smashed a pitched to the right field foul pole. The sophomore right-hander retired the second inning in order but a pair of singles along with a double enabled the Sharks to take a 3-0 lead after three.

Although it stranded the bases loaded in the third, CSUDH's rally happened in the fourth inning. The Toros loaded the bases with Alexis Viramontes hitting a single and Jacquelyn Landers and Galindo both drawing consecutive walks. Murphy cut the deficit to one with a two-run double to left center and Cortinas singled up the middle to drive in the tying run.

Hawaii Pacific nearly had the lead back in the fifth. A fly ball was hit into left field and Murphy, fighting the sun in her eyes, had the ball in her glove by her waist but was unable to secure it, resulting a double. A sacrifice bunt moved the potential tying run to third but Valinches escaped the threat by striking out the next two batters.

CSUDH broke the 3-3 tie in the sixth, when Murphy sent a pitch to center field for her second solo shot on the day. The Toros added much more breathing room for Valinches in the seventh when pinch-hitter Damari Simon hit a grand slam to center to give the Cardinal and Gold an 8-3 lead.

Along with pitching a complete-game, Valinches struck out nine and allowed two walks.
