Polizzi Goes 5-for-5 in Baseball's Loss to Pioneers in Rubber Game

CARSON -- Brandon Polizzi went 5-for-5 with with a RBI and a stolen base but the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team couldn't hold on to a five-run lead as Cal State East Bay scored three times in the eighth to win the rubber game of the California Collegiate Athletic Association series 8-5 Sunday afternoon.

The Toros fall to 14-16 overall, 8-12 in conference play.

Both sides scored their first runs within the first two innings. Nick Morelli reached on a fielder's choice in the first but scored from second on Miguel Castaneda's base hit to left.

A half of a inning later the Pioneers (16-13, 7-11) caught a break when a throwing error for the force out at second allowed them to score the tying run.

Neither starting pitchers has reached the minimum requirement of five innings. Peter Fierros lasted 4.2 innings allowing three earned runs while on the other side Nick Sergi went 4.1 allowing four earned runs.

Tied 5-5, the Toros took the lead in the sixth when Shawn Sweeney scored on Polizzi's base hit to left.

Albert Flores took over the eighth after a leadoff hit and the Pioneers claimed the lead when a bases clearing double drove in three.

CSUDH had a rally in the ninth inning, loading the bases on a single, a throwing error and a intentional walk. Parker Hokuf however hit a popup to first for the third out.

A five-game road trip begins Tuesday with the Toros visiting Westmont. First pitch is at 3 p.m. The Toros escaped with an 8-6 win over the NAIA member Warriors at Toro Field last month.
