SANTA BARBARA — Luke Laurita tossed three shutout innings but a six-run slugfest from Westmont ended his day and the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team suffered an 8-3 setback to the NAIA nationally seventh-ranked Warriors Tuesday afternoon.
The two teams split their season-series meeting after the Toros claimed a win over the Warriors in Carson last month.
CSUDH (14-17) jumped ahead 1-0 when Brandon Polizzi led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Miguel Castaneda's double to left. The Toros had hoped to add more runs in the second and third innings but ended up stranding a runner a third in both frames.
Laurita (2-4) allowed two base hits and a walk in the first three innings but a leadoff single began a six-run barrage. The Warriors took a 6-1 lead using two doubles, a RBI single and a two-run homer.
The Toros has used four different relievers and only Rigoberto Fernandez and Ethan Ectchebarren threw at least two innings.
Despite the Warriors taking control of the game with that four-inning explosion, the Toros did get two runs across in the fifth. Nick Morelli led off with a walk and scored from first on Brady Conlan's double to left center. After Conlan advanced to third on a wild pitch, he eventually scored on Miguel Castaneda's sacrifice fly.
Although Laurita was taken out in the fourth, Warrior starter Sean Coyne threw only three innings, allowing the lone run in the first. Brendon Shoemake (3-0) got the win after throwing two innings, even though he gave up the second and third Toro runs.
The road trip continues for CSUDH as it travels across the state to play Chico State in CCAA play Saturday and Sunday.
