Toros Strike Early But Golden Eagles Deliver Big Hits to win Game Two

LOS ANGELES -- The Cal State L.A. baseball team made Cal State Dominguez Hills miss out on another opportunity to move closer into third place in the CCAA South Division as a two-run fourth followed by a three-run fifth enabled the host Golden Eagles to rally to a 5-3 win over the Toros Friday evening.

The Toros (21-23, 14-18 CCAA), who couldn't capitalize on Cal Poly Pomona's win over third-place Cal State San Bernardino Thursday night, missed another chance after the Broncos blew away the Coyotes earlier today. The Coyotes still lead the Toros by 1.5 games with six contests remaining, including two more against CSULA (12-29, 11-19 CCAA) at Toro Field Saturday beginning at noon.

CSUDH thought to have gotten out of an offensive hiccup in the opening inning. Nick Morelli drew a one-out walk and three consecutive by Brady Conlan, Miguel Castaneda and Parker Hokuf gave the Cardinal and Gold a 1-0 lead. Lester Salcedo and Johnny Palmer delivered two more runs across to take the 3-0 lead.

TyRay Gatewood (5-7) was impressive in the first three innings, limiting the Eagles to a single in each frame. CSULA, however, began its rally in the fourth when Paul Martinez's double put runners two runners into scoring position and a Garrett Dean groundout followed by a Ryan Dixon double cut the deficit down tow 3-2.

The Toros' slim lead completely vanished in the fifth inning when a leadoff double ignited the three-run frame. Back-to-back singles loaded the bases and a sacrifice fly tied the game and Martinez delivered another double to drive in the two runs and end Gatewood's day.

Peter Fierros stopped the bleeding and went on to throw two shutout innings. Ethan Etchebarren went the rest of the 1.1 innings untouched.

CSUDH had a chance to score in a fourth run in the fourth inning when Johnny Palmer hit a one out double. Following a popup, Adrian Guzman hit a line drive into right field and Palmer tried to score from second but the throw was perfectly thrown to catcher Dakota Hernandez, who used his sized to win the collide at home plate for the third out.

Starter Mitchell Moore (2-3) held the Toros without a hit the rest of his eight-inning outing, limiting the Toros to just a walk against 13 batters.

Flamethrower Gabriel Gentner retired the ninth inning despite giving up a Palmer base hit after striking out the left-hander 24 hours ago. Gentner struck out three to retire the ninth inning.
