CARSON — The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team did not have any luck on its side Saturday against crosstown rival Cal State L.A. The Toros couldn't complete any rallies in both games as the Golden Eagles held on to win both contests, 9-7 and 8-5, to complete the four-game CCAA series sweep.
The sweep has now changed the race for the final spot to the CCAA Championships in two weeks. The Golden Eagles got the needed sweep over the Toros and first-place Cal Poly Pomona was en route to sweeping Cal State San Bernardino to now set up a three-team race for third place in the CCAA South Division.
CSUDH (21-25, 14-20 CCAA), which despite having lost seven straight contests, is still 1.5 games behind the Coyotes but the Golden Eagles (14-29, 13-19) have now moved to within two games.
The Toros will finish the regular-season with four games against Cal Poly Pomona. The first two games will be held in Pomona Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. and the finale will take place at Toro Field Saturday at noon. The Golden Eagles and Coyotes will clash on those days as well.
CSULA had struck early in game one against Jeffrey Gogue, which resulted the Golden Eagles to take an 8-1 lead. The Toros did score a run in both the sixth and seventh innings but had gotten back into the game in the eighth. The Cardinal and Gold had loaded the bases with one out and a RBI groundout by Trevor North followed by a two-run double by Johnny Palmer and a RBI single by Daryl Donerson cut the deficit to 9-7.
But the Golden Eagles stopped the bleeding using their flame-throwing closer Gabriel Gentner by asking for four outs against a team he got three saves from.
CSUDH took a 3-1 lead in the second inning of game two. Miguel Castaneda led off with a walk and Parker Hokuf and Lester Salcedo both had base hits to load the bases. Palmer came up short from a grand slam but instead settled with a two-run double and Tyler McLurg got the third run in on a sacrifice fly.
The lead did not last long, however, as CSULA answered back with two runs in the third and retook the lead with a leadoff homer. They did all the damage they needed with a three-run fifth inning.
Luke Laurita lasted only 2.2 innings on the mound, giving up two earned runs. Peter Fierros took the loss after allowing four runs in two innings of work.
Christian Broussard got the win for CSULA after allowing just three runs on eight hits and three walks.
