Golden Eagles Score Two Unearned Runs in Sixth to Win Pitchers' Duel Over Toros

LOS ANGELES – Joe Bresson threw eight solid innings for his first complete-game gem, but a pair of errors in the sixth proved to be the difference in the Cal State Dominguez Hills' 2-0 defeat at crosstown rival Cal State L.A. to open the CCAA series Thursday evening.

The Toros (21-22, 14-17 CCAA) missed out on an opportunity to regain ground in the hunt for the final CCAA Championship spot after third-place Cal State San Bernardino also suffered a 2-0 defeat to visiting Cal Poly Pomona earlier. With the two ballclubs losses, CSUSB still leads CSUDH by 1.5 games with seven games remaining.

Bresson (4-3) was outstanding on the mound against the Golden Eagles (11-29, 10-19) by striking out five and allowing three hits and two walks on 103 pitches.

On the other side, left-hander Daniel Diaz (3-1) kept the Toros scoreless despite allowing eight hits and a walk on 125 throws. He also fanned seven Toros. Flamethrower Gabriel Gentner had a 1-2-3 ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts for his fifth save and shut out the Toros for the first time since Feb. 11 against Cal Baptist.

CSULA scored the two runs in the sixth without recording a hit. The Golden Eagles loaded the bases on two fielding errors and a walk and back-to-back sacrifice flies drove in the unearned runs.

With the Toros tallying eight hits, they also stranded as many runners on base. The closest the Toros were to home plate was in the second inning, when Miguel Castaneda led off with a single and reached third on another base hit and a fielder's choice.

Lester Salcedo had the only extra base hit for CSUDH, a double in the fourth.

The two teams return to Reeder Field for game two of the series Friday at 6 p.m. The two teams will then shift to Toro Field for a twinbill Saturday.
