Toros Fall Back in CCAA Playoff Race After Coyotes Sweep Twinbill

SAN BERNARDINO -- After getting pounded in the first game, 16-4, by Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Dominguez Hills was a strike away from salvaging a split in both the doubleheader and four-game CCAA series but the Coyotes scored three times in the seventh including a two-run single to walkoff a 5-4 win Saturday.

The losses drop the Toros to 21-21 overall, 14-16 in conference play while the Coyotes move to 1.5 games ahead of the Cardinal and Gold for third place in the South Division. The CCAA will take the top three teams in each division into the conference championships in three weeks.

CSUDH is still well in the playoff race but will be asking first-place Cal Poly Pomona for help when it faces CSUSB (20-21, 15-14) this week. The Toros, with eight games remaining, will begin a four-game series with crosstown rival Cal State L.A. Thursday and Friday's games will be held in Los Angeles at 6 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader at Toro Field Saturday.

Game 1 – CSUSB 16, CSUDH 4
The Coyotes had worked quickly in the first inning to end starter Luke Laurita's day, scoring twice on RBI singles.

Trailing 4-0 after two, the Toros did cut the deficit to three when Daryl Donerson, who led off the third with a single, scored from second on Brandon Polizzi's first hit in the series.

But the game was put out of reach in the fourth as the Coyotes tallied six unanswered runs to take an 11-1 lead.

Nick Morelli and Castaneda both homered in the sixth inning and Parker Hokuf had an RBI single in the eighth to drive in the fourth run.

Five different pitchers were used in the ballgame. Ethan Etchebarren had the best outing of the group, striking out six in 3.2 innings of work.

The Toros offense tallied nine hits.

Game 2 – CSUSB 5, CSUDH 4
The Toros seemed to have their leadoff man back to normal as Polizzi started the game off with a walk and stole twice to get to third. After Brady Conlan drew a walk to put runners at the corners with one out, Castaneda would hit into a double play to strand the runner.

Jeffrey Gogue got off to a sluggish start on the mound after the Coyotes put two runs on the board. The Toros came close to tying the game in the second when Johnny Palmer hit a shot to right field that somehow stayed in the park and was caught on the warning track.

But the Toros came through in the fourth inning with the bases loaded. CSUDH's leading RBI hitter Castaneda cleared the bases with a double down the left field line and Lester Salcedo followed with a RBI double of his own to put the Toros ahead 4-2.

Gogue went on to finish a solid outing, going 4-2 innings allowing just those two runs while allowing three hits and four walks. Peter Fierros also had a strong outing in relief, throwing 1.1 hitless innings.

Anthony Cortez got caught in a jam in the seventh inning. The Coyotes got one run across with a one-out single. Cortez got the second out on a strikeout at the cost of a stolen base that puts the winning run at second. He was one strike away from getting out of the threat but a base hit passing a diving Castaneda at second allowed the tying and winning runs to score.

The Toros had knocked out Coyote starter Noah Simon in the third inning. Austin Casillas picked up the win after throwing 4.2 innings allowing no runs and four hits.
