Mother Nature Lets Up, But Seawolves Do Not in Friday Sweep

ROHNERT PARK -- With scattered rain and thunderstoms continuing their deluge from last night into this afternoon, Mother Nature finally gave way to allow visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills to begin its season-ending four-game set against Sonoma State, but the Seawolves, who currently sit fourth in the CCAA standings with the top four teams qualifying for the league tournament, used a 3-run third to take a 4-2 win in the opening stanza before securing a 5-1 nightcap win to sweep Friday's twinbill.

Analisa Nicholson and Madison Murphy drove home runs on the day, but the Toros managed just six hits total in falling to 15-36 overall, and 8-30 in league play.

After splitting their final homestand of the year last weekend, the Toros continued that momentum early with a run in the first after a Seawolf error allowed Jazmin Guzman to score an unearned run.

Sonoma State, however, answered with three in the third with two RBI singles and an RBI groundout, adding an insurance run with another RBI baseknock in the fifth.

Nicholson cut CSUDH's deficit in half with an RBI double in the sixth, but that was final hit for the guests in the eventual 4-2 decision.

Jamie Duran took the loss after allowing earned runs while striking out four.

It was deja vu in the nightcap as CSUDH scored the first run of the game after Madison Murphy was plunked with the bases loaded.

The Seawolves followed their own lead from the opening game, scoring thrice in the third for a 3-1 lead.

Unlike game one, however, SSU scored two more runs while holding the Toros scoreless the rest of the way in the eventual 5-1 win.

Alyssa Valinches allowed four earned runs in the loss, both walking and fanning three Seawolves.

The wins leave the Seawolves just one victory away from clinching the fourth and final spot in next weekend's CCAA Tournament, and two wins away from the No. 3 seed, which would save them from a first round match-up with No. 3 Humboldt State.

The teams square off for an 11 am doubleheader in the final two games of the regular season.
