Unearned Runs in Eighth Allow Coyotes to Sneak by Toros

CARSON -- TyRay Gatewood limited only two runs across in seven innings but a defensive miscue in the eighth enabled Cal State San Bernardino to score twice and claim a 4-2 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday to even the four-game California Collegiate Athletic Association series.

Holding on to a 3-2 lead in the eighth, the Coyotes had a runner on first when a dropped fly in left field put two runners into scoring position and end Gatewood's day despite a good outing. CSUSB tied the game on a wild pitch and reclaimed the lead with a sacrifice fly.

Despite being charged all four runs to Gatewood, two of them were earned in the third inning. The right-hander finished with five strikeouts and no walks.

The two earned runs in the third came on a leadoff home run and two singles.

CSUDH cut the deficit in half in its half of the frame when Adrian Guzman tripled and scored on a Brandon Polizzi sacrifice fly. The Toros took the lead in the next inning when both Miguel Castaneda and Parker Hokuf scored on Johnny Palmer's double down the right field line.

Coyote starting pitcher Tyler Wells reached seven innings allowing the three runs, seven hits and a walk while striking out four.

The Toros came close to tying the game up again in the eighth against Austin Casillas. Miguel Castaneda led off with a base hit, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a ground out but stranded the runner after a strikeout ended the inning.

Both teams meet for a final time in San Bernardino Saturday for a twinbill. First pitch is slated at 11 a.m.

The loss drops the Toros (21-19, 14-14 CCAA) to a half of a game lead over the Coyotes (18-21, 13-14) for third place in the standings, with the top three teams in each division qualifying for the CCAA postseason.  Including tomorrow's twinbill, there are 10 games left in the regular season.
