Defense Supports Bresson as Toros Edge Coyotes in CCAA Series Opener

CARSON -- Right-hander Joe Bresson threw 7.2 innings and got support from solid defense to earn his fourth win of the season in Cal State Dominguez Hills' 2-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino to open an important California Collegiate Athletic Association series Thursday.

The win improves the third-place Toros (21-18) to 14-13 in league play and increase their lead over the fourth-place Coyotes (17-21, 12-14) by a 1.5 games in the South Division standings. The two teams will meet for game two at Toro Field Friday at 3 p.m.

In addition, the Toros have won six straight.

It was a pitching duel from start to finish as both starters held their opponents scoreless for six innings. Bresson (4-2) managed to get the Coyotes to limit six hits to singles. He also struck out and walked two.

On the other side, Don Sullivan (5-5) did everything he could to allow his offense to produce runs. He out-matched though against Brady Conlan, who went 3-for-4.

The Toros had the closest opportunity to get on the board in the third inning. With Adrian Guzman at second and two out, Conlan hit a hard line drive into center field. The line drive appeared to have benefit the Coyotes as it enabled center fielder Damion Edmonds to make a perfect throw to home to tag out Guzman and preserve the scoreless game.

After six shutout innings, Bresson got into trouble at the start of the seventh after the first two runners got on. Following head coach Tyler Wright's visit to the mound, he got two outs on as many pitches by inducing an unsuccessful sacrifice bunt attempt followed by an infield fly to the shortstop Guzman. After falling behind on the count to the No. 9 hitter Edmonds, Conlan had a quick chat with Bresson and the very next pitch a ground ball was hit directly to the third baseman for the third out.

CSUDH managed to get itself on the board in its half of the seventh with back-to-back leadoff triples from Parker Hokuf and Lester Salcedo. Pinch-hitter Adrian Padilla drove in the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Coyotes ended Bresson's day when leadoff hitter Grant Buchanan singled through the right side. Buchanan stole second to setup a RBI single by Andrew Lopez.

Peter Fierros and Anthony Cortez retired the remaining innings to save the win.
