Duran, Valinches Get Different Kinds of Support as Toros Win Two

TURLOCK -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills softball team closed day two of Stanislaus State's Tournament of Champions Saturday with a pair of wins in two different fashions. Five home runs helped southpaw Jamie Duran out during a 10-inning stretch to post an 8-6 win over Notre Dame de Namur and Alyssa Valinches was backed by stellar defense in the Toros 2-1 win over Hawaii Hilo.

The Toros wrap up both the Tournament of Champions and non-conference play Sunday, facing Academy of Art at 9 a.m. followed by Hawaii Pacific at approximately 11:30 a.m.

Game 1 - CSUDH 8, NDNU 6 (10 Innings)
It was deja vu all over again for Madison Murphy as for the second consecutive day she opened a game with a solo home run, sending a pitch to right field.

Duran (6-14) limited NDNU to two hits through the first four innings, but the 1-0 lead disappeared when  the Argonauts scored four times in the fifth.

But the long ball came back into effect. Jasmine Ruiz led off the sixth with a home run down the left field line and Jazmyne Cortinas tied the game at 4-4 in the seventh with a two-run blast the same direction.

Although the Toros broke the 4-4 tie in the eighth with Lyzette Reveles' two-run homer, the Argonauts answered back using the small ball method, using a single and two grounders to score in the two runs.

After a quiet ninth, the Toros bounced back in the 10th. With Ruiz at the plate, she got new life when a dropped foul ball in right field allowed her at-bat to continue and she took a pitch to right center field her for second homer of the day and give the Toros an 8-6 lead.

While she was backed by bats, Duran on over 140 pitches allowed five earned runs on eight hits and two walks while fanning 10. Her opposite Shelby Reali went six innings conceding two runs but reliever Erin Powers tossed four frames and allowing three earned runs.

Game 2 - CSUDH 2, HHU 1
While Duran got the run support she needed for the win, Valinches (3-5) had the opposite. The right-hander managed to get at least 15 groundballs fielded cleanly on the left side. Third baseman Alexis Viramontes had eight assists while Jacquelyn Landers had seven. Valinches also had an assist and even robbed a hit when a she caught a line drive over her head.

The Toros jumped ahead 1-0 in the fourth inning when Jasmin Guzman hit a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Reveles' base hit to right center.

The Vulcans lone run came in the fourth. They drew a two-out walk followed by a RBI double to center field.

CSUDH retook the lead in the sixth when Cortinas blasted a pitch over the left field fence.

Valinches finished the day allowing four hits and three walks while striking out one.
