Gatewood's Gem Helps Toros Split Doubleheader with Cal State East Bay

CARSON -- The Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State East Bay baseball teams split a doubleheader to open the California Collegiate Athletic Association series Saturday. The Pioneers snuck away with an 8-4 win in game one after scoring five in the ninth but the Toros returned the favor by claiming game two, 3-2, behind TyRay Gatewood's complete-game performance, his first in a Cardinal and Gold uniform.

The two ballclubs will decide the winner of the three-game series at Toro Field Sunday at 11 a.m.

Game 1 - CSUEB 8, CSUDH 4
While the Toros were struggling to get baserunners, Joe Bresson was impressive in his five innings of work, allowing five hits and a walk on 84 pitches.

CSUDH had struck first in the fourth inning by scoring two runs, one of which was unearned. Brady Conlan led off reaching third base on a fielding error in the outfield and scored on Miguel Castaneda's single up the middle. Parker Hokuf followed with a two-bagger down the left field line to drive in Castanada and make it 2-0 CSUDH. The Toros took a 3-0 lead in the sixth when Nick Morelli drew a leadoff walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Lester Salcedo.

The had quickly disappeared in the seventh when the Pioneers scored three unearned runs off of Albert Flores. CSUDH did get the lead back in its half of the inning, Daryl Donerson hit a one-out single up the middle, advanced to second on another base hit from Brandon Polizzi and scored on Conlan's base hit through the left side.

Anthony Cortez couldn't secure what would have been his fourth save of the season as the Pioneers scored two runs off of him in the ninth and added three unearned runs off of Rigoberto Fernandez.

The Pioneers only two earned runs while starter Alex Vesia conceded three in his 6.2 outing. He also allowed eight hits and two walks. Derek Oetken picked up the win after throwing 2.1 of shutout ball.

Game 2 - CSUDH 3, CSUEB 2
It was all Gatewood from start to finish. The right-hander gave up 10 hits, a walk and a hit batsman but did strike out two on 110 pitches.

East Bay scored all two of its runs in the first inning off a two-run homer.

The Toros answered back one inning later. Hokuf was hit by the pitch after a six-pitch battle with Jacob Call and Kevin Lugo followed him with a base hit to right. Adrian Guzman found a hole on the right side that allowed Hokuf to score from second and Donerson hit a sacrifice fly to score in the tying run.

CSUDH would score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning. Polizzi reached on a one-out single, reached third on Conlan's hit and scored on Castaneda's blooper in the left field.

Gatewood got himself into trouble trying to go for the complete-game in the ninth. He loaded the bases on three singles and one out but managed to get a force out at home and a ground ball to first to secure the win.
