Breakaway Fifth Inning Gives Toros CCAA Series Sweep Over Stanislaus State

CARSON -- Shortly after losing a three-run lead in the fifth, the Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team answered back by using five hits, a sacrifice fly and three pitching mistakes to score five in the same inning as the Toros ran away to an 11-6 win over Stanislaus State to complete the three-game California Collegiate Athletic Association sweep Sunday.

Along with Cal State San Bernardino losing to Cal State East Bay, the Toros (20-18, 13-13) moved into third place in the CCAA South Division standings over the Coyotes by a half of game. The two ballclubs will meet this week in a four-game series starting Thursday at 3 p.m. at CSUDH.

Starting pitcher Luke Laurita looked outstanding in the first two innings, retiring the side in order. The Toros took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Nick Morelli and Brady Conlan scored on back-to-back singles by Miguel Castaneda and Parker Hokuf.

Morelli finished the day going 2-for-3 with three RBI. His first RBI came in the second inning. Leadoff man Brandon Polizzi stole two bases to get to third and Morelli brought him in on a sacrifice fly.

Laurita began to struggle getting outs after the second inning. He escaped a two-hit third inning but the Warriors got two runs across on five consecutive hits. His day came to an end in the fifth when two hits and a sacrifice but enable the Warriors (18-18, 9-15) to tie the game at 3-3. Peter Fierros (1-0) checked in and loaded the bases on a hit and a walk but struck out the next two to get out of the jam.

Warrior starter Robbie DeVries (2-2) started out sluggish the first two innings. He held the Toros scoreless in the third and fourth innings but his day had ended after he hit Conlan and gave up a base hit to Castaneda. Travis Johnston went in and hit Hokuf to load the bases and a walk by replacement catcher Tyler McLurg to forced in the go-ahead run. Johnston's day quickly ended without recording and out. The Toros were not done as a sacrifice fly by Johnny Palmer and four straight singles drove in four more to give CSUDH an 8-3 lead.

While the Warriors scored three times in the seventh, the Toros countered with the same amount in their half of the inning. Daryl Donerson and Adrian Guzman hit back-to-back two-baggers, Polizzi and Morelli each singled and a suicide squeeze play by Conlan's replacement in the third spot Jeff Gilstrap proved to be a success despite reaching on an error.

Both teams had used five pitchers in the ballgame.
